Swap Gameboys for Gird and Cleeks this half term at New Lanark

New Lanark World Heritage Site, Scotland

Bring the family along for a fun filled autumn day out at New Lanark, one of Scotland’s 6 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, this October Break. There will be Family Tours with Costumed Guides and Victorian Toy Workshops running during the October Week Holidays (16-22 Oct) as well as the ‘Lifting the Lid’ exhibition.

Let your children learn and play with a range of historic toys in the Historic classroom hosted by one of the New Lanark guiding team or join a Guided Tour with a costumed character guide who will inform you of some amazing insights into the history of the village. What was a piecer? How were Robert Owen and David Dale related? Why did the workers wear no shoes?

With the colder weather setting in this October, this is the perfect month to enjoy many of the indoor attractions of New Lanark’s Visitor Centre, from the the Annie McLeod Experience and Historic classroom, to the new touring exhibition ‘Lifting the Lid’ display, from the National Library of Scotland, telling the fascinating story of the development of the Scots diet over the past 400 years.

Part of a Scotland-wide tour that aims to introduce the National Library’s collections to people across the country, close to where they live, Lifting the Lid is included with a New Lanark Visitor Attraction ticket, or Robert Owen’s School for Children ticket.

The Lifting the Lid display is made up of a series of colourful panels which tell the story of food and drink in Scotland, based on photographs and descriptions of material in the National Library’s collection. The display will help visitors understand more of how their ancestors lived and how their diet links to what we eat today. Before the industrial age, the rural poor were said to be ‘remarkably healthy’ with a simple, frugal but wholesome diet. For most, meat was an occasional luxury and desserts unknown. But, those who could afford to do so consumed large amounts of meat and used copious amounts of sugar now considered damaging to health.

You can easily spend a day exploring New Lanark, learning about its fascinating history and when you have finished all of this, why not head out for a woodland walk in the falls of Clyde Wildlife Reserve where you can admire the stunning autumn leaves turning from bright green to golden reds and brown before heading to the Mill Café for a bite to eat and a browse round the Mill Shop.
