Tesco shopper? Vote for The Prentice Centre!

The Prentice Centre  calls for your votes to bag a share of bag charge fund

The Prentice Centre (West Granton Community Trust) is bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.

Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – all raised from the 5p bag levy – being awarded to local community projects. greenspace scotland is working with Groundwork to provide support to communities in Scotland.

Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant – and The Prentice Centre is one of the groups on the shortlist.

“We have been selected for the Tesco bags for help initiative, where there is instore voting for your favourite charity to win.  We are delighted to be selected, as 1st place is awarded up to £4000, 2nd place up to £2000 an 3rd place up to £1000!”, explained Jacqui. “We have requested to use the funds awarded to buy new tables for the hall as our present ones are unsafe and need replaced.

“We have recently suffered a number of funding cuts to the Centre which has been difficult to manage. Due to the financial constraints we face, it is not possible to replace large items of equipment, for example tables for our hall which is primarily used by our pensioner group, playgroup children and other organisations based in the Centre: Children 1st, Alzheimer Scotland and North West Carers are all based inThe Prentice Centre. As funding is so tight for us, we welcome any monies received and are looking for as many votes as possible from the local community.

“The way that people can vote is when they shop in any of the three Tesco stores selected ie. Davidson’s Mains, Queensferry Road and South Queensferry store.  Each purchase receives a token.  The token can then be put into your favoured charity box which is displayed instore usually after the tills.”

Voting is open in Tesco stores throughout July and August. Customers will cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop.

Tesco’s Bags of Help project has already delivered over £30 million to more than 4,600 projects up and down the UK. Tesco customers get the chance to vote for three different groups every time they shop. Every other month, when votes are collected, three groups in each of Tesco’s regions will be awarded funding.

Tony McElroy, Tesco’s Head of Communications in Scotland, said: “We are absolutely delighted to open the voting for July and August. There are some fantastic projects on the shortlists and we can’t wait to see them come to life in hundreds of communities.”

Emma Halliday, Community Enabler Coordinator at greenspace scotland, said: “We’ve been thrilled to see the diversity of projects that have applied for funding, ranging from outdoor classrooms, sports facilities, community gardens, play areas and everything in between.

“We’re looking forward to learning the results of the customer vote and then supporting each group to bring their project to life.”

Funding is available to community groups and charities looking to fund local projects that bring benefits to communities. Anyone can nominate a project and organisations can apply online. To find out more visit www.tesco.com/bagsofhelp
