Health Project celebrates the work of ‘amazing’ volunteers

During Volunteers’ Week (1st to 7th June) Pilton Community Health Project will be celebrating the amazing work that volunteers in the area do.  All week we will be posting details of their achievements on facebook.  North Edinburgh would be a much poorer place without the efforts of residents who volunteer (writes PCHP’s Anita Aggarwal).

To coincide with Volunteers Week, PCHP will launch ‘Hidden Gems’, a series of walks developed by our walk leader volunteers.  The walks reveal many surprises that north Edinburgh has to offer.  Even if you have lived here all your life, you will be sure to learn something about the local area on these walks.  The walks will be led by our dedicated team of volunteers with other local experts volunteering their time to share their knowledge about the area and its special places and people.

Volunteers are essential to the work that Pilton Community Health Project is able to deliver.  They take on a wide range of roles, including counselling, leading walks, setting up a walk/jog, running cooking groups, and of course our Board.  Increasingly, volunteers are leading their own projects with minimal support from us; good examples include Parklife and MAD cooking.

Clare Symonds, one of PCHP’s development workers said ‘I couldn’t do my job without the volunteer team.  Their ideas, enthusiasm and commitment are what has kept the walking groups happening in north Edinburgh for nearly 15 years’.

Carol Targett , who co-ordinates the counselling services at PCHP added ‘The volunteers here help people change their lives.  The contribution volunteers make to life in north Edinburgh can’t be measured.  We want to make sure that our volunteers are really recognised for their contribution and well supported in the work they do, which is why we undertook achieving the Investing in Volunteers standard last year’.
