Parliamentary praise for Granton Gogglebox!

Five star reviews are commonplace in Edinburgh at Festival time – the superlatives are thrown around like confetti, but it takes a special performance indeed to merit a mention at Scotland’s parliament at Holyrood. Take a bow then, You Name It! Youth Theatre – Granton Gogglebox has been praised in a parliamentary motion by Northern and Leith MSP Ben Macpherson!

Granton Gogglebox Hits the Stage
That the Parliament congratulates You Name It! Youth Theatre on its devised performance of Granton Gogglebox, which opened at Granton Youth Centre on 3 August 2016; notes that this performance was funded by the CashBack for Communities programme, which takes funds recovered from the proceeds of crime and invests them in free activities and programmes for young people across Scotland; welcomes that this funding allowed the group to provide a 12-week period of workshops and rehearsals and enabled the performance to be available free of charge; appreciates that Granton Gogglebox was an original performance created by the young people involved and reflects their own ideas and opinions; further appreciates the significant role that youth theatre plays in building confidence and social skills and in developing communities, and looks forward to the next performance by You Name It! Youth Theatre.

You Name It Youth Theatre has been together for almost two years and is based at Granton Youth Centre. It’s run by Siobhan Wyman, a drama teacher at Broughton High, and her assistant Ella Phillips who is in the third year of her BA (Hons) Drama and Performance.

Siobhan said: “We were lucky enough to receive a block of twelve weeks of funding from CashBack for Communities. This enabled us to run our workshops and even our show for free, and over those twelve weeks we created Granton Gogglebox.

“Granton Youth Centre has been a fantastic base for our drama and we would like to thank the Centre for all that they have helped us achieve on our journey so far.”

As well as Cash Back for Communities and Kevin Ross and all the staff at GYC, special thanks also go out to AMK Scaffolding (who supplied and constructed the stage scaffolding for free), Chris Ross and Gordon Baird, Tommy Hughes, Wendy Weir and Jasmine Hill.

Granton Gogglebox, a local take on the popular TV show, was great fun – an eclectic mix of characters included William Shakespeare, Big Liz, Pete fae Pilton, Gary fae Granton and Lady MacBeth!

The excellent cast were David Allen, Lily Allen, Lydia Avialoti, Josh Barlow, Tatania Caiafas, Isla Cleland, Finlay Halliday, Anna Morrison, Shona Ross and Lloyd Venters. Liam Clack and Jordane Keddie played the live family.

You Name It! Youth Theatre welcomes new members of all abilities – if you are interested or would like to find out more email info@grantonyouth.com
