The UK Government announced in November 2015 that Vigils would be held to mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme (1 July 1916). The main Vigil taking place in Scotland will be held in the Scottish National War Memorial in Edinburgh Castle.

Public access to the Vigil is by free ticket only. There are still places available for members of the public wishing to attend tomorrow evening: bit.ly/1Ts2qEa

The public are invited to attend at one of four entry times, between 18.45 and 20.15 on the evening of Thursday 30th June .  In order to admit as many visitors as possible, we respectfully ask that people attend for a maximum period of 45 minutes and arrive fifteen minutes in advance of their allotted time-slot.

Upon entry to the Castle, visitors will be directed to the Memorial where they will file past the Shrine; four Sentinels will stand watch over the Casket containing the names of Scots who died in World War One.  This is a Vigil to remember those who have fallen in Battle and visitors are expected to retain a respectful silence in the Memorial.  On this occasion, there will be no opportunity to search the Rolls of Honour within the Memorial.

Guests issued with a ticket for 20.15 entry are invited to attend a short Vigil service from 21.10 after which the Vigil will be manned overnight and open only to regimental associations.

Those Scots who took part in the Battle will be represented by groups of Service personnel and Veterans Groups keeping Vigil, in silent watches, throughout the evening and night around the Casket within the Shrine of the Memorial.  The Casket contains the names of the Scots who fell in the First World War.

The public are invited to take part in this vigil service by booking a free ticket to secure their place.
