“It’s an honour for me to be able to support this organisation and indeed this community, both of whom I admire.” – Irvine Welsh

The Junction – Young People, Health & Well-being is a Leith based charity offering support to young people living in North East Edinburgh. Irvine Welsh was born in Leith and grew up in North East Edinburgh which gives him an understanding of the challenges these young people may face.

This year Irvine Welsh is back with his new book ‘The Blade Artist’ which will be released this month. To publicise the latest book Irvine is hosting book tours throughout the UK, including Edinburgh, so as Patron of his local charity, he took the opportunity to visit The Junction on Tuesday morning.

Irvine stopped by for a cup of tea whilst our director Sam (above) updated him with details of the work we have been doing for young people in the Leith community since his last visit.

The Junction have expanded our range of services over the last few years, including moving to a new premises on Great Junction Street.  A couple of our youth advisors came by to meet Irvine and got the chance to get their books signed (Youth Advisors are a team of young people who we meet with regularly for ideas and feedback on our services (youth advisor Danielle pictured with Irvine, below).

The Junction team are all very grateful to Irvine for taking time out his busy schedule to meet with us and for his ongoing support throughout the year with our various projects.

Established in 2005, The Junction is an award-winning organisation which offers lots of health-related services, education and support for young people in Leith and North East Edinburgh aged 12-21. The Junction work hard to promote long-term prevention of health problems, to raise young people’s awareness and self-esteem and to enable them to make informed choices about their health and well-being. The aim is to help them help themselves which if successful will ultimately have a positive effect on the community as a whole.

Irvine Welsh said: “The Junction supports young people at various stages and times, as they manoeuvre through differing life choices, whether these be about relationships, family, school, sexuality, health or wellbeing.

“Omnipresent, The Junction is there at the heart of the community offering education, support and its own distinctive brand of loyalty and determination to do the best it can for local young people.”
