  1. Alison’s tragic death, probably occasioned by a series of family tragedies, including the death of her son in a car crash, shocked all who knew her. Neighbours and friends have been have been visiting and handing in sympathy cards to her partner, Eric.

Just as shocking perhaps is the news that only a few hours after her suicide, after the police had departed, the flat was broken into and burgled. Thieves got away with a TV and two laptops – one of which contained Alison’s artwork (she was a gifted artist) which is irreplacable. West Muirhouse folk are disgusted by the break-in, and anger is growing among the community at perceived police indifference to the crime. The flat next door to Alison’s and Eric’s was burgled last year (while the occupant was asleep – he awoke to find someone in his flat) in exactly the same manner, and the same culprits are suspected by Birnies Tenants. Police failed to investigate that one too
