Diwali set to light up Edinburgh

Thousands of people are expected to take part in Edinburgh’s biggest ever celebration for Diwali this weekend (Sunday 29 October, 1.30-7pm). The colourful and vibrant Festival of Lights – which symbolises victory of light over darkness and good over evil – is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains all over the world. Memorial garden puts research project in the public eye

Members of the public are being invited to place an illuminated lily in memory of a loved one as part of an exploration of death and bereavement. The project will see 1500 individual notes of remembrance displayed at an art installation in the form of a temporary memorial garden in Edinburgh’s Grassmarket. SFRS warn about deliberate fires this Autumn

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was called out to over two thousand deliberate fires across the country last autumn. Latest figures reveal last year’s total has increased from the previous season and the majority of those fires were deliberate and reckless – putting pressure on firefighters when genuine emergencies arose and placing lives at risk. Wanted: 11,000 childcare workers!

A new campaign to recruit up to 11,000 people into the childcare profession is underway. The campaign – ‘Shape their worlds. Shape your career.’ – aims to encourage more school leavers into the profession to deliver the expansion of funded early learning and childcare to 1,140 hours a year, or 30 hours per week, by 2020.
