Forth and Inverleith Voluntary Sector Forum 

Forth and Inverleith Voluntary Sector Forum will take place on Wednesday 6 August from 10-12pm at Pilton Community Health Project on Boswall Parkway.

Local Neighbourhood Partnership officers Elaine Lennon and Jim Pattison will attend to discuss community priorities as identified during the recent Local Community Plan consultations. There will also be a presentation by CEC Welfare Manager Alan Sinclair.

Attendees are asked to bring along details of any training available through their organisation to allow the compilation of a list of available training in the area.

Edinburgh Compact – ten years on

Seems hard to believe, but the Edinburgh Compact – the groundbreaking agreement between the voluntary sector and public sector organisations to work in partnership for mutual benefit – is now ten years old, and EVOC wants to know: how’s it been for you?

DURING this Compact 10 year the city’s Third Sector will go through a process of both reflecting on ten years of progress since the Edinburgh Compact Partnership was formed, and looking forward to the next ten years (writes Milind Kolhatkar, Community Planning Officer at EVOC).

This process of reflection and projection will be grounded not only in the experiences of the city’s Third Sector leaders, but also – crucially – on the evidence base that you provide us with.

Compact Voice is the project to gather, assess and share quantitative and qualitative data from across the breadth of Edinburgh’s Third Sector. This bank of information will help shape the futures thinking that sits at the heart of the Compact 10 year.

Through a process of surveys, focus groups, discussion forums and guided projection Third Sector leaders will engage with the rich diversity of Edinburgh’s Third Sector as well as with our Public Sector partners.

The key outputs from this process will include a growing data bank to support futures thinking, a body of evidence to help articulate the value Edinburgh’s Third Sector brings to the city, and increased opportunities for the Third Sector itself to focus on the positive difference it makes each and every day to the lives of people in need in all parts of the city.

The Compact 10 year aims to deliver outcomes including improved understanding and better relationships between the Third Sector and our Public Sector partners, clearer strategic direction to the planning and delivery of Third Sector services, and a shared understanding on the part of all Community Planning Partners that a city with a robust Third Sector is a city where communities have a rich and supportive social fabric.

Inverleith’s BIG Search takes place on Monday

Visit the of wealth of parks, libraries and other landmarks in Inverleith!

Have fun in your area!

Come join The BIG search in Inverleith – for all ages (teams of up to 6 people one of whom must be named responsible adult) to explore the neighbourhood by following clues and questions, then bringing the completed sheets back to King George V Park for an afternoon of fun activities including BBQ, launch of new park play equipment!

Come collect your question sheet and map plus a free tshirt for first 50 participants from 12 at Blackhall Library and bring it back to King George V Park by 2.30pm. Take part in fun activities, BBQ and winners will be announced after launch of new play equipment at 3pm.

Foodies Festival to tempt tastebuds in Inverleith

Foodies Festival, the UK’s largest celebration of food & drink, returns to Inverleith Park all weekend from Friday 8th – Sunday 10th August.

Each year the ever-growing festival sees visitors flock to feast on a delightful choice of culinary activities, making Foodies Festival one of the big social events of the summer.

This year we’re promised top chefs cooking in the Chef’s Theatre; wine, beer, and cocktails in the Drinks Theatre; you can join top pastry chefs in the brand new Chocolate, Cake, Bake and Preserves Theatre, and kids can learn to cook too in the Children’s Cookery Theatre.

A new Feasting Tent at the heart of the festival will become the social hub, where visitors will enjoy eating with chefs, friends and family at long banqueting tables.

Another fun addition this year is the Vintage Tea Tent that will hold daily tea dances, alongside a Vintage Kitchen Market allowing visitors to pick up beautiful pieces to add to their own kitchens at home.

The new Real Ale and Cider Farm offers an area for visitors to chill out on hay bales and strike up a conversation with beer and cider expert Melissa Cole and fellow beer lovers. There’s a guitar behind the bar for those in the mood to get a sing-along started! Who knows, maybe The Wurzels will make a surprise guest appearance!

A new Chilli Food Market will excite those with a love for spicy foods with a range of chilli growers and artisan producers of sauces, sweets and jams. For those who can handle the heat a Chilli Eating Challenge takes place at 5pm daily!

Forth and Inverleith Neighbourhood Partnerships are supporting an initiative to improve local communications, and they need your help to get things right!

Blackhall Plant Sale tomorrow

Blackhall Horticultural Society are holding their annual plant sale tomorrow (Saturday 10 May) at St. Columba’s Church Halls on Hillhouse Road.

The Society plan to have an excellent range of plants for instant colour in your garden as well as some ‘home grown’ perennials, and there will be free advice on hand from time-served experts too.

Last year’s sale made over £440 and the group hopes to beat that total this weekend so get there sharp for the bargains – doors open 10am!

Following concerns made to Inverleith’s CEC Councillors by residents in Telford in regards to increased commuter parking and the CEC consultation on introducing a Priority Parking Scheme. Drylaw Telford Community Council have organised a meeting to be held in:

The purpose of this is for you as residents of Telford to receive a full explanation on how the Priority Parking Scheme could operate and the benefits it will bring to you, the cost of a yearly permit and the hours of operation. There will be also discussions on other options which could help parking situation in Telford.

So come and along and listen and find out all about the scheme and the success of it in other areas of the city which like Telford has or had large commuter parking problems.

The Charger

Bloomin’ kids! They stand around on street corners, play football in the street and have absolutely no respect for their elders. All they’re interested in is X Factor, FaceBook and computer games. They’ve never had it so good – now, when I was a boy …

Is that your view of young people? Well, a new publication produced in North Edinburgh may just change your mind. Local Community Learning and Development worker Callum McLeod has produced ‘The Charger’ to let the wider community know about the wide variety of positive activities many of our young people are involved in.

Callum explained:  “This is its first edition, but I’m hoping to get at least one out each term and I’m sure it’ll improve with each edition. Iit’s worth having a wee nosy at it to see some of the stuff which has been happening on your doorstep.

“There are plenty of fab examples of where children and young people have been and are involved in decision-making in North Edinburgh – and so I’m planning that the Charger’s focus will be about showcasing as much of this as possible.

“It’s being aimed at children and young people, agencies and individuals within the community and so please pass it on to people you think might be interested. It’ll provide an opportunity to shine a spotlight on children and young people-led issues, achievements and developments in future editions, so please get in touch if there’s anything you’d like to add for the next one!”

Botanics announces new Regius Keeper

phpThumb_generated_thumbnailjpgThe Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RGBE) has announced the appointment of Simon Milne MBE (pictured above) as its new Regius Keeper.

Mr Milne will succeed Professor Stephen Blackmore following his retiral later this month and will become only the 16th person to hold the post since it was created in 1699.

Simon Milne (54) is currently Chief Executive at the Scottish Wildlife Trust in Edinburgh, a post he has held since 2004. Prior to this, he was Director of the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens, Hampshire for four years, preceded by a distinguished 20-year career as a Royal Marines officer.

Sir Muir Russell, Chair of RBGE Board of Trustees paid tribute to the new appointee: “I am delighted to have someone of Simon’s calibre joining us to continue the excellent work done by Steve Blackmore. Simon is familiar with many of the issues facing us, particularly our hot topics of conservation and biodiversity, and we will benefit hugely from his extensive experience in senior leadership roles. I very much look forward to working with him in the future.”

Mr Milne said he was thrilled to be offered the opportunity to take up such a prestigious and important role, adding: “I had a fulfilling and enjoyable time leading the Scottish Wildlife Trust; it was an honour to work with so many committed staff, volunteers and members to help protect and restore our precious wildlife and wild places. The role of Regius Keeper at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh offers me an opportunity to return to the remarkable world of plants. I am looking forward with relish to new challenges and the opportunity to play a crucial role in developing appreciation, education, knowledge and conservation of the plant kingdom.”

The new Regius Keeper will take up his post in February.
