Letters: Brutal capitalism = devastation

Dear Editor

Individuals and organisations of investors manipulate the economy to create maximum profits for themselves, closing down those places of work not profitable enough – regardless of the devastation caused to people’s lives.

This system of capitalism causes slump to occcur, the cost of which being passed onto the working population in job losses, wage restrictions, rising prices and cuts to public services.

To operate this system, important positions of control are occupied mainly by the already wealthy and privileged section of the population. They know it is impossible to make the system work for all: the conclusion must be drawn they do not care.

The extraction of trillions of pounds in profit and paid out to investors, in addition to the vast salaries and bonuses, is money that belongs to the people who produced it in the first place. This extraction leads directly to slumps that devastate the lives of millions of children, women and men.

The question must be asked again: why and how can such a cruel system be tolerated? Is it beyond our capabilities to change things, making the economy work in the interest of the whole population? Common humanity and compassion demand it.
