Think Again? Rally for Europe on Saturday

A recent study by the independent Centre for Cities identified Edinburgh as likely to be the sixth worst Brexit-affected city in the UK.  Aberdeen was identified as the city likely to be worst affected in the 62 city study

On Monday 2 October, Edinburgh City Council adopted a motion regretting the outcome of the 23rd June referendum vote, calling on the UK Government to avoid the worst damage by pursuing continued membership of the Single Market and Customs Union and instructing its officials to identify all possible ways in which the damage can be mitigated.  All parties supported the motion apart from the Conservatives.

More than fifteen months on from the Brexit vote, Britain still has no clear idea of where it’s going. The pressure on the government is mounting. Grassroots pro-Remain groups have organised major rallies such as “People’s March 4EU” in London and the recent “StopBrexit National March” attended by 30,000 people in Manchester.

Now Edinburgh is to join the rest of the UK in staging pro-EU rallies in every European constituency of the UK on Saturday (14 October).

These will promote the benefits of the EU locally and the positive case for remaining/rejecting Brexit.  It shows that the Remain movement will not be silenced. Anywhere in the UK.

The Edinburgh Rally for Europe will take place at 2pm on the High Street outside Edinburgh City Chambers.  It is being organised by the Young European Movement and the European Movement in Scotland.  Speakers include Tommy Sheppard MP, Ian Murray MP, Patrick Harvie MSP and Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP.

Similar rallies will take place on the same day in Newcastle, York, Nottingham, Bristol, Cardiff, London, Cambridge and Reading, Liverpool and Birmingham.

Rethink Brexit, stop Brexit,… Information about disarray within the cabinet is trickling down, and the clock is ticking with negotiations on Britain’s future relationship with Europe still on the starting blocks and ordinary voters bemused.

Opposition is rising, including in Scotland, where 62% of people voted Remain.

The title of the Edinburgh event is “Rally for Europe: #ThinkAgain”, with further information on Facebook.  Please do come along.

Democracy did not end on June 23rd 2016. Leaving the EU is one of the biggest mistakes the UK has ever made. We have the democratic right to change our minds.
