Festival Village provides new stage for local music talent

A pop-up venue with iconic views of the historic Old Town has been praised by local musicians for providing a new platform for live music in the capital.

By the end of August, more than 200 local and international artists and bands will have performed on one of the three live music stages at Festival Village: Waverley. Following the recent closure of a number of renowned live music venues in the city, including Studio 24, Electric Circus, and the former Picture House, Festival Village has been praised by many local musicians for giving the city’s live music scene a boost while providing a platform for local artists to perform to an international audience attending the Edinburgh festivals.

Steve Morrison (above), a 24 year old musician from Edinburgh who performs regularly at Festival Village: Waverley, said: “Pop-up venues such as Festival Village are becoming more and more important for the live music scene as they provide an inclusive space for emerging musicians to perform to a variety of different audiences at a time when live music venues across the city are dropping like flies.”

Jon Mackenzie, a 30 year old singer-songwriter from Edinburgh commented: “Festival village has a fantastic variety of live music which has been running seven days a week from 11am til midnight. This has been great for local musicians like myself as it has provided a platform to perform music to an international audience at different times throughout the week and not just the usual Friday/Saturday night.”

Festival Village: Waverley has regenerated the once redundant area above Waverley Mall and, as well as daily live music throughout the festival, offers customers a variety of local street food vendors as well as a fine dining seafood restaurant.

Simon Keane, Director of Festival Village: Waverley, said: “Edinburgh has unfortunately suffered the loss of many of its iconic live music venues in recent years, making it much harder for local musicians to get gigs. With Festival Village’s three stages, we have been able to provide local talent with a space to perform to an audience they would otherwise have struggled to reach.”

Festival Village is located on top of Waverley Mall on Princes Street and is open from 11am until midnight, seven days a week throughout August.
