Game of Thrones-loving Scots go gaga for gadgets

The launch of Game of Thrones yesterday means that people across Scotland will once again be glued to their TV screens, waiting to see if Khaleesi makes it to Kings Landing. This comes as research from Scottish Gas finds that Scottish people are spending more than four hours a day binging on their favourite box sets.

To mark the launch of the series, Scottish Gas has looked at how much time people spend in front of the box or glued to their gadgets. The research has found that on average people in Scotland spend:

  • 32 hours a week tuning into their favourite TV shows (30 hours 12 minutes in Edinburgh)
  • 73 hours a week using entertainment tech such as ipads computers and games consoles
  • 24 hours a week on computers, 12 on tablets and five on games consoles
  • Two hours a day using cleaning devices around the home

Scottish Gas is installing smart meters, for free, in homes across Scotland. Replacing traditional meters, they come with a handy smart energy monitor, which shows how much energy people are using – even when watching their favourite box set series, Game of Thrones!

Scottish Smart Energy Expert, Andy Parke, from Scottish Gas has been specially trained to help customers better understand and manage their energy use. He said: “Whether it’s binging on box sets, browsing the internet or playing on our favourite apps, the Scots clearly love their technology!

“But it’s important to remember that these gadgets can use a lot of electricity if they’re on for long periods of time. Switching them off when not in use and turning them off at the wall rather than leaving on standby overnight can help keep your energy usage in check.

“Having smart meters installed can help, too. They automatically send meter readings to your energy supplier so you don’t have to. Smart meters also come with a smart energy monitor that shows you how much energy is being used and how much is being spent, in pounds and pence, in near real time.

Scottish Gas has already installed more than 360,000 smart meters across Scotland. Join the millions of people already enjoying the benefits of smart meters.  To find out more visit: www.scottishgas.co.uk/smart
