Local stars shine at Volunteer Awards ceremony

North Edinburgh was well represented at Edinburgh’s Inspiring Volunteer Awards this week. The gala event at the City Chambers was an opportunity to celebrate the incredible work of the city’s unsung heroes who do so much to improve the quality of life for so many in the capital.

Save the Children charty shop volunteer Lily Cook (below) was the recipient of the Lord Provost’s Inspiring Volunteer of the Year Award 2017.

The Awards ceremony took place during Volunteers’ Week on Wednesday. Lord Provost Cllr Frank Ross hosted the event and presented 35 Individual Awards, 13 Team Awards, 1 Investing in Volunteers Award to Smart Works Edinburgh and 11 Special Recognition Awards.

The Lord Provost said: “Lily Cook certainly is an ‘Inspiring Volunteer’ and worthy of the 2017 Award. Her first-hand experience of customer service has proved invaluable to the Save the Children charity shop on Dalry Road. I am delighted to present these awards and to add Lily’s name to the volunteering honour board in Edinburgh’s City Chambers.”

Susie Dunstan, Retail Regional Manager at Save the Children, said: “Lily regularly volunteers three days a week and has done so since she started, roughly 30 years ago. Lily has had a huge impact on the local community in Dalry Road – many of the customers have grown up knowing Lily all their lives and she is a hugely respected and loved; known for her generosity, wise advice, sense of humour and great taste in music!

“Lily is the life and soul of the party, loved by the volunteers and customers and is a well known and respected individual in the local community. Lily can often be found dancing in the shop, encouraging more sales for Save the Children!

“Lily makes customers feel welcome and is often able to tell them about the history of Edinburgh – it’s a truly wonderful experience to be a customer when Lily is on the till! Lily has always been welcoming to others in the team, helping to train and make people feel comfortable in their role. She is also known for repairing and mending items, using her previous experience as a furrier, in order to make the most money possible for Save the Children.”

Congratulations to Lily, and to all of Edinburgh’s magnificent volunteers. See below for the full list of award winners:
