Put a Spring into your step this Easter!

SPRING is a time of new beginnings – so with this in mind, NHS 24 has issued a number of top tips for exercise this Easter.

The advice comes as part of the national Be Health-Wise This Easter campaign, run by NHS 24 on behalf of NHSScotland.

Exercise has been shown to reduce risk of major illnesses including heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancer.

And as the milder weather sets in there are a number of top tips to kick start a fun exercise routine as NHS 24’s Medical Director, Professor George Crooks explains: “Spring is the ideal time to get out and about and make the most of the milder weather. It’s important to make exercise fun so  you don’t lose motivation.

“Activities such as walking, swimming, cycling, jogging, skiing, aerobic dancing or any of dozens of other activities can all help in kick starting your exercise routine.

“When starting any activity, you should warm up and not push yourself too far. It’s a good idea to wear comfortable trainers,  loose fitting clothing and keep reasonable expectations of yourself.

“Don’t get discouraged if you stop for a while.  Get started again gradually and work up to your old pace and track and celebrate your success!

“It’s also important to make time so it becomes a regular part of your lifestyle. Whether it’s popping out of the office at lunchtime for a brisk walk or factoring in some swimming on your way home from work – it all adds up to a healthier lifestyle.

“If you’re daunted by the prospect of taking up exercise for the first time, why not take the first step by walking. It’s free, easy to do and when you have a walking companion, or a dog you’re more likely to stay motivated.

“Finally, general health advice and information on how to stay healthy this Easter can be found atwww.nhsinform.scot/easter .”
