Police in Edinburgh are appealing for information and urging the public to be vigilant following a bogus caller incident.
On Sunday 9 October a man called at a woman’s flat in Magdalene Avenue at around 4pm. He claimed to be carrying out maintenance on the building and required entry to her home. The woman, who is in her sixties, later discovered that her purse, which contained a three-figure sum, had been stolen.
The intruder is described as white, in his twenties, with dark hair, wearing jeans and a fawn-coloured top.
Sergeant Andy Johnson of Leith Police Station said, “Bogus callers will usually claim to be acting on behalf of an organisation such as the council, gas network or a charity. Once they have gained access to your home, they will use the opportunity to steal cash or other valuables.
“Always ask for identification, as legitimate callers should be able to provide this without any issues and always remember that you are under no obligation to let a stranger into your home if you are unsure. If you have any concerns, ask them to call another time and contact a trusted friend, relative, neighbour or police.”
Anyone who has information about this incident, or who recognises the description of the suspect, is urged to get in touch with Police Scotland on 101 or make an anonymous report through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
