Morrisons local derby raises over £1200 for charity

Morrisons Charity Match 1

Sunday 28 August saw the battle of all battles. Morrisons Granton took on Morrisons Ferry Road in a Charity Football match held at The Spartans Football Club’s Ainslie Park Stadium. The result was a victory for Ferry Road – and over £1200 raised for charity!

Each of the Morrisons stores has a “Community Champion”, who ensures that the store engages with local charities and supports local community organizations. The Community Champion co-ordinates in-store fundraising for Morrisons national charity partnership, organises community bag packs, school and community tours and looks to support local events – plus a whole host of other activity bespoke to each store.

Granton Community Champion, Fiona Smit, pitched the idea of a Charity Football Match to fellow Community Champion Kirsty Clark, who works at Ferry Road. There is a long standing friendly rivalry between the two stores: not only between the colleagues but also the customers too!

The idea of a charity football match brought together the overwhelming love for football in the area but also the camaraderie of the staff.

Colleagues at both stores were asked to vote for a charity they would like the event to raise money for: Granton’s charity of choice was SiMBA, while Ferry Road chose St Columba’s Hospice.

After an exciting game, that included lots of young and old staff running about and a few yellow cards, it all ended in a 2 -2 draw that had to be decided by a penalty shoot-out! It was nail-biting stuff watched by around 100 people that resulted in Ferry Road lifting the trophy!

The evening proved to be a big success, with the match ticket and raffle sales accumulating a grand total of £1,208.71 for our chosen charities.

This match couldn’t have gone ahead if it wasn’t for the Morrisons Colleagues who donated their time and money to play, the spectators who came to watch and buy raffle tickets, the generosity of the referee, Gordon Crooners, who waved his fee for charity and the companies who donated a prize for our raffle;
