CBBC’s Awesome Authors is coming to the capital this weekend, giving Edinburgh’s children the chance to take part in this fun and exciting national event.

Produced by BBC Learning, the event which will take place at Craigmillar Library on Saturday and Sunday, aims to get children excited about reading, creative writing and storytelling. The event runs from 10am until 5pm both days and is free to attend.

CBBC Match Of The Day Kickabout presenter Tyler West will be at Craigmillar Library to host the event and will be joined by authors David MacPhail (Thorfinn The Nicest Viking) on Saturday and by Pamela Butchart (The Spy Who Loved School Dinners) on Sunday.

Children can go along to learn how to create a killer sports headline or learn more about illustration as they practice drawing a ‘selfie-portrait’. Fans of the fantasy series Wolfblood will be able to practice their storytelling skills and create their own scenes for the drama online.

There’s a Danger Mouse Detective Trail, where children can help Danger Mouse to stop the dastardly Baron Greenback from destroying the world’s supply of books.

There’s also a chance for visitors to get their own list of book recommendations based on all the things they like, thanks to the Summer Reading Challenge, who are on hand with their ‘Book Sorter’.

The event is suitable for children aged up to the age of 12 and they must be accompanied by an adult.

Cllr Richard Lewis, Culture Convener and City Reading Champion, the City of Edinburgh Council, said: “Hosting Awesome Authors at Craigmillar Library will really help to raise the profile of reading for pleasure amongst children and families in the local community.  This is an exciting opportunity for Edinburgh libraries to work in partnership with CBBC to bring an interactive approach to learning literacy through a series of fun activities.”

Helen Foulkes Creative Director, BBC Learning, said: “BBC Learning is delighted to bring CBBC Awesome Authors to Edinburgh. We will be providing hands-on activities themed on children’s favourite shows with the aim of inspiring more young people to pick up books and start reading for pleasure.”

CBBC Live takes place this year in Birmingham, whilst similar events are taking place at libraries in Belfast, Poole and the Vale of Glamorgan as well as the Edinburgh event. Over the weekend, Katie Thistleton (above) will be live on air in CBBC HQ, linking to the each of the Awesome Author events.
