Jack Caldwell, who stood as an independent candidate in Northern and Leith in May’s Holyrood elections, has produced a ten-page report describing his experiences of the campaign. He hopes his campaign report will encourage others to stand as independents in future elections – but plans to join a political party himself.
Jack, who was 22 at the time of the election, said: “I gained over 1,000 votes in Edinburgh Northern and Leith, despite it being my first time running with no political experience and having to learn the electoral system as I went along. For example, I wasn’t aware of the “1 free post” letter Royal Mail offer.
“I have published a report (below) on my experiences in a bid to encourage more people to stand as independent candidates in the future. The report should also shed more light on how the day-to-day campaigning process works in Scotland.”
While Jack is keen that more individuals stand as independent candidates in future elections, it seems that he may not be one of them. In the report’s closing remarks, he said: “Parties that seek to make government are an integral part of any political democracy and I plan on joining one later down the road.”
