A small Edinburgh company which makes safe and stylish teething jewellery has won a social media competition run by Theo Paphitis, best known for his appearances on the BBC TV show, Dragon’s Den.

Edinburgh mum Jen Downie was one of six winners of “Small Business Sunday” on Monday 4 July for her business, Num Num Teething Jewellery, which makes handmade teething jewellery for mums to wear and babies to chew.  Jen designs and makes all of the necklaces herself from her home in the west of Edinburgh.

Jen setup the business a little over a year ago after she wasn’t able to find a suitable and stylish necklace to wear when her daughter, Hannah, started teething.  Num Num Teething Jewellery provides more than just a stylish necklace for mums, they are teethers on the go for babies and fun for babies to play with when they are breastfeeding or being carried.

The award, Small Business Sunday, was created by Theo Paphitis in 2010. Each week, Theo rewards small businesses that tweet him and describe their businesses in one tweet.  Every Monday night, Theo reviews and chooses his favourite lucky six who are then re-tweeted.  As he has over 450,000 followers, this provides a massive boost to the chosen lucky businesses.

Num Num’s teething necklaces come in a variety of designs, assembled by hand, and are practical, fun and beautiful for mums to wear.  The beads used are made from squeezable food-grade silicone (the same material as a dummy or bottle teat) which is flexible yet firm.  It is perfect for chewing on as it provides a firm and satisfying chew for babies while being kind to tender gums.

As a mum with a new baby herself, safety is very important to Jen.  The beads are fully tested and meet European safety standards.  They also have a breakaway clasp which safely pops apart when pulled and just as easily pops back together again.  All of the necklaces can also be safely washed and sterilised.

Jen Downie, Owner and Designer of Num Num Teething Jewellery, said: “It’s amazing to have won a competition judged by an entrepreneur and businessman as successful as Theo Paphitis.  My husband and I think of Hannah as Num Num’s tiny CEO so maybe the reason she didn’t sleep on Monday night was she knew we had won!”

““The business has only been going a little over a year so to get this kind of recognition is amazing and  I want to thank Theo and his team for the work they do in supporting small businesses such as mine.  I would also like to thank Elliot and his team at Bébélephant, our distributors in the UK, who have been fantastic and are always very supportive.”
