From Scottish Cup glory to Rampaging Chariots!

Liam learns some new moves at Leonardo!

Scottish Cup winning midfielder Liam Henderson is a class act- he’ll go down in history as a key player in the heroic Hibs team that finally broke their Hampden hoodoo and brought the Scottish Cup home to Leith.

Liam’s as versatile as they come, and maybe that’s just as well. A couple of weeks ago he’s enjoying cup success with Hibs, then it’s back to parent club Celtic – and on Saturday he learned that the ‘funny old game’ has gone robotic!

Liam was at Leonardo Finmeccanica’s Crewe Toll site last weekend, taking part in a robotic football championship organised to encourage children to get involved in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) subjects at school by helping them engage with the fun side of engineering.

Instead of spending a Saturday afternoon avoiding the hefty challenges of premier league opponents, the Celtic midfielder relaxed and witnessed tackles and dribbles generated by remote controlled devices!

The Scottish Robotic Games tournament saw hundreds of children and air cadets from across Scotland test their robotic inventions in a series of challenges from robotic football, to sumo and tug of war.

All day a steady drum beat of competitors kept time to the pop music blasting out of the sound system, fixing up robots who’d come to a halt, cheering their team mates on and rushing to the starting line for the next game.

Watching all the action unfold was three generations of Hendersons, two of whom have connections to the company: former employee Sandy Henderson, Nick Henderson (Apprentice Training Manager) and Liam Henderson (above).

After a hard fought final the winners were finally announced. The overall football winners were ‘Big Spoon Little Spoon’ from Musselburgh 297 ATC and they received a special gift from Liam of a football used at the 2015 UEFA Europan League match between Inter Milan and Celtic (above).

The overall 2016 Scottish Robotic Games winners were ‘Kitchen Sink’ from Merchiston Castle School (above).

Before presenting the prizes, Liam said:” I’m very honoured to be here. I was delighted when I was asked to come along and it has been great to see so many talented people. I have to say that ‘Big Spoon Little Spoon’, I had you earmarked from the beginning! You were a joy to watch. I’m extremely glad I came along – I got a tour and it is a wonderful place here and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my day.”

Leonardo Finmeccanica – I thought he was an Albanian goalkeeper!
