A further education alumnus is blazing a trail in theatre photography with an exhibition of his work at the Creative Exchange in Leith.

Taking his pictures to new heights, freelance photographer Matthias Kremer will showcase two years’ of images taken of Edinburgh College’s Performing Arts Studio Scotland (PASS) acting students in action in his ‘From Stage to Still’ exhibition.

The photographs were shot at several plays since 2014 directed by PASS staff; Shakespeare, Greek tragedy and productions devised by Edinburgh College students. The exhibition reflects the energy and dedication it requires to take to the stage and create new worlds for a theatre audience.

The photographer said: “This is a display of my best work and I hope that both theatre and photography lovers alike will find something to enjoy. I know my way around the theatre as my background is in acting so this exhibition combines the two things I really love; photography and theatre at the same time – which is great.”

The exhibition will also feature work from Edinburgh College Creative Industries students and various Creative Exchange businesses including Floris Publishing who will host their Kelpies book jacket design competition, followed by the UNESCO City of Literature poetry exhibition.

Matthias added: “This exhibition will gain important exposure and provide greater insight into the vibrant and professional standard of work that is taking place at what is surely one of Scotland’s most exciting theatre studios.”

Madeleine Brown, Edinburgh College Creative Business Development Executive who manages the gallery space said: “Visiting the Creative Exchange Gallery is a very special experience. Edinburgh College has built up a strong exhibition programme and Matthias Kremer’s work will let you experience the actor’s world in an award-winning setting.”

Creative Exchange is a new and exciting business incubator and flexible workspace for people working in creative industries. It offers affordable space alongside business support, creating a new hub for collaboration and innovation in Leith and is one of Edinburgh’s most beautiful gallery spaces.

The public can see the exhibition at The Creative Exchange on Constitution Street  until 19 February. Admission free.
